The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

Fender was presented with the prize on 16 October as his third album People Watching was named the best record of the last 12 months.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved my current career if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

Fender also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds assisted locations that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties stemming from floods, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from performances in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

Also the 1994 recipients they contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," stated artist the singer. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our winning touched the lives of others."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected two grassroots venues in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The first in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were acquired under the community ownership program, which is backed by a national body and supporters who purchase "shares" in the properties.
